The Town
Once a quiet and small fishing village, Marmaris today is one of the most atractive touristic destination of Turkey, particularly for sailors. Three marinas with 2.000 berth capacity, outstanding landscapes and views, friendly people, mild climate, fair winds and countless sheltered bays around, it has become the best sailing ground not only for Turkey but probably for entire East Mediterranea. With its historical ruins, many hotels, restaurants, night clubs and holiday resorts, the population increases to over 500,000 in peak seasons.
Marmaris has a sub-tropical climate with hot summers and mild and rainy winters. July-August period can be extremely hot and dry, the temperature reaching up to 35-40 degrees Celsius while the temperature can drop to 5 degrees Celsius at night in winter. Sea water temperatures varies from 21 to 28 degrees Celcius from May till late December. Predominant winds are North Easterly (meltemi) which usually starts picking up around midday and dies with sunset. The Wind generally is in the range of 10-15 kts and rarely exceeds 25 kts offering ideal sailing conditions.
